Learning about Wikis

The term "Wiki" was borrowed from the Hawaiian word wiki, which means quick. So a wikispace is a website that can be updated quickly. It does not require technical knowledge and only requires a web browser.
Wiki's can be useful in schools; teachers can share lesson plans, discuss events, and track individual students progress in group projects. With Wikis one can see the history of a page, in other words what has been added or deleted from the page.

Based on your surfing of the above wikis answer the following questions
  1. Describe the elements of the wiki. A website that anyone can edit or change.
  2. What did you like about the different wikis? Simple, don't have to know a lot about the website. Easier than a company creating their own website.
  3. What are the pros and cons associated with the different wikis you explored. Con: Don't know if the information is absolutely accurate. Pro: easy to set up and accessible.
  4. Describe what it takes to manage a wiki. Create an account, invite people in the group, learning how to use the different features, and a web browser.
  5. What do you think about wikis for student use. Provide 2 -3 examples how students would use wikis for learning. You can tell who is participating in the class. Create a study group, presentations and projects are easier, and communicate with the teacher outside of class.
  6. Explain how educators could use wikis in a classroom. Provide 2-3 examples. Post assignments students missed if absent, communicate with parents, and post due dates or important dates on a calendar.
  7. Examine the examples of different educators wikis (below). Post the best one and explain why it was the best one. If the team decides none are the best then go out into the web world and find one you all agree on that is best and explain why. All members of the group must decide and agree. Mrs. Maine was our favorite because we feel she was organized and her site sucked you in. She posted notes, a calendar and different information to help students in the Biology class.
